For a very long time the stigma that surrounds HIV and AIDS has been with us. In as much as we wish to do away with it, we have never been successful at all. This is not a good sign at all especially considering that HIV and AIDS still has no cure. The more the stigma prevails, the more the new infections.
It is important that we learn some practical ways of dealing with this kind of stigma because it will help us stop the new infections. We are all involved in this and we have no way we can escape. Unless we deal with stigma, innocent people will continue to suffer in darkness and to get infections that they could have otherwise prevented.
Deal with stigma effectively
- The first way you can deal with HIV related stigma is through learning the facts. Most times people are stigmatized in the assumption that they were involved in high risk behavior such as sex work and this is never true sometimes. There are several modes of HIV transmission and maybe they got it the other ways. At the same time, you cannot get HIV by being a friend, kissing, sharing and showing concern. When you have this knowledge you will not stigmatize others or yourself.
- The second way of dealing with HIV and AIDS stigma is through taking the HIV test. The experience alone would embolden you to stop stigmatizing. Maybe you are stigmatizing someone who already has it because you are not sure of your status. The counseling you get while taking the test would also help you deal with stigma.
- The care offered for HIV should be improved. With quality services people are able to deal with the virus and live positively. This way they would also feel that they are not so different from others hence reduced self stigma.
- There should be equal opportunities for all. HIV status should not be criteria for offering privileges to certain marks or institutions. In any case, it should not even be inquired.
- We need each other and if we can have this attitude, we would deal well with the stigma. We should avoid being judgmental and always view others the way we would wish them to view us.
If we can employ these stigma reduction strategies, we would be able to combat the disease. HIV is better than cancer if you look at it critically. It is not even the only chronic illness there is. People live with diabetes and cancer of different types and they are never stigmatized. Why should we let it happen on HIV cases?
